City View is a forgotten community located between downtown and the suburbs. We are midtown Ottawa, and experiencing a rapid  density expansion! Homes were built here in 1950s on large lots.  Parks were scarce but large yards compensated.
Today the large lots are being subdivided into two or three lots due to intensification. The original owners, a large number of seniors in our community, are moving out. Young families are moving in. There is a rapidly growing number of children and no parks.  Our two “parkettes” are old, outdated and small. The 1 block, narrow strip under the hydro wires on Bassano, is not even a “parkette” It is too small for any use.
21 Withrow is for sale in City View.  A heritage stone home, built in 1842, on a 2 acre lot.  This is a wonderful celebration of Canadian history. This is in a community where there is no available green-space. A community where parents have to get in their car to drive their children to a park in another community. A community where seniors have no opportunity to go to sit in a park.
City of Ottawa says they have no money!
-Over $1 million found for Mooney’s bay without any public consultation
-Cash in lieu money coming from park development fees from all the new homes built in City View; 50 homes in the last 5 years alone!
-$1.2 million used to purchase scrub land in Barrhaven by city staff through delegated authority.
-All the dollars being spent to celebrate Canada 150 anniversary.
What better way to celebrate our history than to purchase this property.  It is 6th oldest building in Ottawa. Wilfred William Campbell, a Confederation poet, lived there for three years.
It is a treasure of our history.
First Nations people started what has become a strong Canadian tradition of helping others. This basic, paramount Canadian value has taken root in our Canadian psyche. It has become a living part of our Canadian way of life today.  The First Nations People concept of helping others and can be seen in recent times as support for the Vietnamese Boat People in our recent past,  and the Syrian Refugee Crises of today. We think that this property would make a wonderful site to achieve many things beyond a mere park. It could become a center to promote peace, reconciliation and the Canadian tradition of helping others.
So spend money on this gem? Use it as a historic center to promote peace and understanding?  Create a lovely cultural, heritage park for children, seniors and all Ottawa residents to enjoy? A lasting investment, beyond 2017? Lots of potential?
Not in Ottawa.  We have no money.
