Ottawa City Parks by Definition

City of Ottawa Park Policy Standards:
A Community park, by definition, has:

  • a minimum of 32 000 sq m to maximum of 100 000 sq m
  • located along collector roads and close to transit stop
  • has walkway, play equipment, sports field and lighting

A Neighbourhood park, by definition, has:

  • a minimum of 12 000 sq m to 32 000 sq m
  • 10 minute walking distance
  • may include: seating, play structures, multi-purpose court, outdoor rink, splash pad, mini sports field.

A Parkette, by definition, has:

  • a minimum 4000 sq m to 12 000 sq m
  • 2-5 minute walking distance

NOTE: Parkettes shall supplement a neighbourhood’s park network; they shall not be considered as sole classification parkland in a community.
Therefore City View has NO PARKS, by city definition.

Existing City View Parkland/Green-space Facts:

  • Doug Frobel “Park” (behind Nepean Museum) covers an area of 6350 sq m., a parkette, by definition. This includes the baseball diamond and parking lot. It does not include the Nepean Museum.
  • City View “Park” (beside Elizabeth Wynwood School) covers an area of 4254.3 sq m.Another parkette, by the city’s own policy standards, and definition.
  • Bassano “Park” covers an area of 878.22 sq m. This “park” is located on Bassano, between Withrow and Rossland, under the hydro wires.
  • None of these “parks” meets the area requirements of a Neighbourhood Park. So they should be classified as Parkettes.
  • Bassano does not even qualify as a parkette.

City View parkland totals 11 482.5 sq m
This represents only a quarter of the parkland/green-space to homes ratio set by the city’s policies and practices.
More parkland/green-space in City View is much needed:

  • By our children, seniors and adults to promote healthy, active living in an enjoyable fashion
  • Because parks and community centers are essential to build a stronger, vibrant and safe community
  • AN ADDITIONAL PARK IN OUR COMMUNITY SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASES PROPERTY AND RESALE VALUES AND MAKES OUR COMMUNITY A MORE DESIRABLE PLACE TO LIVE.

Since 1977, our community association has been working to improve our park situation.
Your present City View Association Executive has been working directly with Councillor Rick Chiarelli to expand and improve our green-space.
A number of residents have contacted us and mentioned that the centrally located Roger’s property for sale at 21 Withrow should be acquired for community green-space and parkland.
More information on this topic is coming soon.
